the plan

moving here comes down to 6 steps

  1. 1register with the county you'll work inlos angeles, orange and san diego each run their own. a few cities do too.
  2. 2find a shop with a health permitevery county here only registers artists who work at a permitted shop.
  3. 3use the guest window while you sort it outanother california county's registration covers 5 days in a row, 15 days a year.
  4. 4book guest spots before you movea week at a shop here gets you clients and a feel for the area.
  5. 5get found online before you landclients here look for work before they look for names.
  6. 6show up at a conventionit's the fastest way to meet artists and clients at once.

step 1

register with the county, not the state

california doesn't hand out one tattoo license. each county's health department registers its own artists, and you register again every year.

who registers you

most counties ask for the same core things: a photo id showing you're 18 or older, a bloodborne pathogen certificate from a course they approve, your hep b record, and a fee. orange county also takes a certificate from a los angeles county approved course.

what to do with this

  • take your bloodborne pathogen course from a provider on your new county's approved list, so it counts.
  • call the county before you move and ask what they need from someone coming from out of state.
riverside, san bernardino, ventura and other counties

they each run their own program too. check the county health department's body art page before you move. we haven't checked those yet, so we're not listing their rules here.

step 2

you need a shop before the county will register you

orange county says it straight: registrations only go to people who own or work at a body art shop with a valid permit. los angeles county says the same thing on its form. so line up a shop first.

the deal you make matters. a chair you rent and a commission split work out very differently. booth rent vs commission walks through the math.

step 3

you can work here for 5 days on your old registration

5

days in a row you can tattoo in a new california county on your current registration.

15

days total a year. after that, register where you're working.

this is for artists already registered in another california county. it's on the los angeles county form and in san diego county's summary. coming from another state? you'll need to register before you work.

step 4

guest spots let you test a city before you move

a week at a shop here gets you real clients, a few local photos for your portfolio, and a feel for which neighborhood fits you. it's also how a lot of artists find the shop they end up joining.

how to land one and how the split usually works: guest spots in socal.

step 5

get found before anyone here knows your name

your instagram followers are mostly back home. clients here don't know you yet, so they need to find you by your work.

step 6

a convention puts you in front of everyone at once

socal has conventions through the year. working one, or just walking one, is the quickest way to meet the artists and shops here. working one has its own permit and deadline, usually 30 days ahead.
